What a Mekko chart shows
A Mekko is a stacked chart where each column’s width is also data. In a market map, width shows each segment’s size and the stack shows who has what share of it. One picture answers “where is the market, and who wins there?”
Why Google Slides can’t do it natively
Google Sheets charts, which Slides embeds, have no variable-width columns. The manual workaround is drawing rectangles by hand and recalculating every width when a number changes, which few people do twice.
Making one with Deckcell
- In Google Slides, open Extensions → Deckcell.
- Choose Mekko.
- Paste your table: segments (such as regions) across the top, players down the side, values in the cells.
- Pick 100% to compare shares, or Unit to show absolute sizes. Optionally merge small players into “Other”.
- Click Insert. Select the chart later to edit the data.
Design tips
- Sort columns from largest to smallest segment, left to right.
- Keep the same player order in every column so the eye can follow it.
- Use “Other” for the long tail; five or six named players is plenty.
- Use a 100% Mekko for share questions and a unit Mekko when absolute size matters.
